Civil War Reenactors Visit
OMS eighth graders were fortunate to attend a presentation from Dr. Randy Krakauer and Ms. Miki Krakauer, two Civil War reenactors playing the role of Doctor Major Jonathan Letterman and his wife, Mary. The "Father of Modern Battlefield Medicine," Dr. Letterman described his experience as a Civil War physician who created the first ambulance system and military triage, as he was inundated with wounded soldiers and amputations on the Civil War battlefields. Mrs. Letterman recalled her experience living in a border state, detailed the many roles of women in the war, and highlighted the importance of railroads. Both brought amazing, authentic Civil War artifacts that they were able to share with OMS students, as well. Thank you Dr. and Ms. Krakauer!
