O'Donnell Middle School 8th grade student Tana Bernard represented OMS and Stoughton as our Project 351 Ambassador, attending "launch day" in Boston over MLK weekend with other 8th graders from around Massachusetts. Project 351 is a statewide youth-led service program that convenes a new class of 8th grade ambassadors each year, representing the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts. Congratulations Tana!

Here is a look at some 7th grade artwork at the O'Donnell Middle School. Students practiced observation drawing by looking very closely at little pumpkins. Then they practiced value scales and added value to the pumpkins (again by looking very closely at them on the tables) using both pencil and charcoal. Lastly, the students learned about color theory to choose color schemes for a watercolor resist background using crayons and watercolor.

Congratulations to O'Donnell Middle School 8th grade students Jhayla Sealy (1st place), Colin Thornton (2nd place), and Jason Ikonitskiy (3rd place) for winning the VFW's Patriot's Pen Essay Contest at the local level this school year! All students on team 8B at the OMS recently participated in this annual contest. The Patriot's Pen contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300-400 word essay expressing their views on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. The 2023 essay theme was “How are you inspired by America?” Stoughton American Legion Commander Michael Pazyra, representing the Stoughton VFW on behalf of Commander James Kelly, presented certificates and prizes to the winners at the O’Donnell Middle School Wednesday morning. The three winners from OMS are pictured here with Commander Pazyra, OMS Principal Katrina Crowley, and team 8B social studies teacher Caitlin Valair.

After 14 years at the O'Donnell Middle School, including the last 11 as Principal, Matt Colantonio was honored at the OMS 8th Grade Class Day Ceremony with a certificate for his "completion of the middle school program" - the same one the 8th graders received. Mr. Colantonio will be joining the team at the SPS District Office as the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources & Health in July. Katrina Crowley, current OMS Assistant Principal and the next Principal of the OMS, is pictured here with Mr. Colantonio and presented him with his certificate.

Students at the O'Donnell Middle School recently took part in a month-long NCAA basketball tournament style competition called "Mammal Madness." The competition, run by Arizona State University, encourages students across the country to learn about animals and their habitats. This is the 11th year of the tournament and the third year students at OMS have participated. Students research specific animals and create information slides or battle posters to share with their classmates (we posted some examples here). They then use that information to fill out a bracket in a who-would-win simulated tournament between species. The habitat of the battlefield comes into play, and much like in the wild, species do not always fight, but one may lose by walking away, leaving the playing field, or through external interference. This year, the wolverine defeated the okapi in the championship battle. Justin Koch, who had the highest scoring bracket on team 8B, is pictured here with his trophy. Other winners for different class periods on Team 8B include: Emmanuel Saint-Hilaire, Adalynn Giunta, Carl Thompson, and Henrique Dos Santos. Congratulations!
